Built for Calgary and Southern Alberta

Hail, chinooks and long winters. A roof that cannot rust.

Alberta weather is hail in summer, chinooks and deep cold in winter, and wind and strong sun all year. Here is what an Interlock® aluminum roof does about each, and where it has limits.

Hail

Impact-rated, and honest about it

Two Calgary hailstorms show what is at stake: the storm of June 13, 2020 caused nearly $1.2 billion in insured damage, and the storm of August 5, 2024 caused $3.25 billion, the second-costliest insured disaster in Canadian history. Interlock's Slate, Shake, Cedar Shingle and Mediterranean Tile aluminum panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, listed by Intertek under Delta Building Products. No roof is hail-proof, and the material warranty excludes hail larger than 38 mm (1.5 in).

Chinooks

Melt, refreeze, repeat

A chinook can lift a winter day from well below freezing to above it within hours, then the cold comes back. Each cycle loosens asphalt granules and curls shingles; cedar takes on water that freezes in the grain. Aluminum absorbs nothing and cannot rust. Interlock panels lock to each other on all four sides with no exposed fastener, and wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) installed to manufacturer specification.

Snow

Light on the framing, built for the load

Interlock panels weigh roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre depending on profile, a fraction of concrete tile. That leaves the structure's capacity for what an Alberta winter puts on it: snow. Smooth aluminum lets snow slide, so we plan snow guards over entries, walkways and the driveway at the quote.

Ice dams

We look at the attic, not just the roof

Ice dams form when heat escaping into the attic melts snow that refreezes at the cold eaves. No roof covering stops that on its own, and ice damming is excluded from the material warranty. At the estimate we look at insulation and ventilation with you and tell you what we see.

Wildfire

Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly

FireSmart Alberta recommends Class A roofing and advises avoiding wood shakes and shingles. Under ASTM E108 (CAN/ULC-S107 in Canada) a fire classification belongs to an assembly, not a panel: on our roofs Class A is achieved with two layers of GAF VersaShield® over 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood. Aluminum itself does not ignite, but no roof is fireproof. If your home backs onto forest, ask us to quote the Class A assembly.

Sun

Strong sun, a finish made for it

Alberta is sunny, and the sun is stronger at elevation. The Alunar® finish is warranted for 30 years and has CRRC-rated solar reflectance from 0.25 to 0.44 depending on colour, and thermal emittance from 0.83 to 0.86.

What matters where you live

Calgary, Airdrie, Cochrane, Chestermere, Okotoks and Strathmore: hail in summer and chinooks all winter. Calgary is where we have installed more roofs than anywhere else, and where our office is.

Hail season

Impact-rated Slate, Shake, Cedar Shingle and Tile panels (UL 2218 Class 4, listed by Intertek). No roof is hail-proof; ask your insurer how they treat an impact-rated roof.

Chinooks

Snow melts and refreezes many times a winter. Nothing in an aluminum panel to crack, curl or soak up water.

Older homes and infills

The look of slate or cedar on an inner-city bungalow or a new infill, at roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre.

Calgary metal roofing from the certified Interlock® installer: we put the Interlock® aluminum roofing system on homes, acreages and condo and townhouse complexes in Calgary, Airdrie, Cochrane, Chestermere and Okotoks, north to Red Deer and Lacombe, west into the foothills and the Bow Valley, and south and east to Lethbridge and Medicine Hat. The panels lock to each other on four sides with the fasteners out of the weather. They are made in Canada at the Interlock plant in Delta, BC, and installed by our own Alberta company from our office in Calgary.

Completed Interlock® roofs by community, from our job book. Each community with three or more has its own page.

Our office in Calgary serves every region on this site: Metro Calgary, Central Alberta, Southern Alberta, Medicine Hat & South East, Foothills & Crowsnest Pass and Banff–Canmore–Bow Valley. 11 areas also have a local site of their own (above), with local permit rules, jobs and prices: same company, same warranties. Why aluminum, for Calgary metal roofing

Why Calgary homeowners choose aluminum. And who stands behind it.

Older homes

Bungalows, infills and older homes

Inner-city bungalows, 1970s split-levels and new infills all take the same system. Interlock's Slate, Cedar Shingle and Shake profiles give the look of stone or wood at roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre, a fraction of concrete tile or natural slate. Every profile needs a minimum 3/12 roof slope, and we confirm yours at the consultation.

Acreages

Acreages, farms and foothills properties

On an acreage or farm the house, garage, shop and barn can share one profile and colour. In the foothills and the Bow Valley, where forest comes close to the house, we can quote the Class A Fire Rated Available assembly, which uses two layers of GAF VersaShield® over 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood under the panels. Snow guards over entries, decks and the driveway are planned at the quote.

Condos

Condo and townhouse complexes

Under Alberta's Condominium Property Act the board of the condominium corporation usually decides on the roof, often with a reserve fund study in hand. We give boards one profile and colour across every building, the product documents they ask for, and both warranties in writing.

Our office

A Calgary company, with its own crews

We install every roof ourselves, from our office on 46 Ave SE in Calgary. The manufacturer's Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty and our 10 Year Limited Labour Warranty come with the roof, and the service team that answers for it after the install is here in Alberta.

Recycled

Up to 95% recycled aluminum

All of our answers ↗

Who installs Interlock metal roofing in Calgary?

We do. Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd. is the certified Interlock® roofing contractor for Alberta, installing Interlock® aluminum roofs since 1999 from our office on 46 Ave SE in Calgary. The panels are made in Canada by Interlock Roofing at its plant in Delta, BC, and we install them with our own company. We are BBB Accredited with an A+ rating, Baeumler Approved, a Metal Roofing Alliance member, and winners of a 2026 GuildQuality GuildMaster Award.

Will a metal roof stand up to Calgary hail?

It is built for it, but no roof is hail-proof. According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, the Calgary hailstorm of June 13, 2020 caused nearly $1.2 billion in insured damage, and the storm of August 5, 2024 caused $3.25 billion, the second-costliest insured disaster in Canadian history. Interlock's Slate, Shake, Cedar Shingle and Mediterranean Tile aluminum panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, the highest class in that standard, listed by Intertek under Delta Building Products. Very large hail can still dent metal. The material warranty excludes hail larger than 38 mm (1.5 in) and the labour warranty excludes hail, so hail damage is a matter for your home insurance. Ask your insurer how they treat an impact-rated roof, and we will give you the listing and warranty documents they may want.

Do chinooks damage roofs in Calgary?

They are hard on asphalt shingles. A chinook can melt the snow on a roof within hours, and when the cold returns the water refreezes; over a winter that cycle loosens granules, and chinook gusts lift and crack shingle tabs. Interlock panels have no granules and no tabs: they lock to each other on four sides with the fasteners concealed, and wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) installed to manufacturer specification. Ice dams are a separate problem that starts with heat escaping into the attic, so we look at insulation and ventilation with you as well.

Which communities does calgarymetalroofing.com cover?

Calgary and the Calgary market: Metro Calgary (Calgary, Airdrie, Cochrane, Chestermere, Okotoks and Strathmore); Central Alberta (Red Deer, Lacombe, Innisfail, Olds, Sylvan Lake and Rocky Mountain House); Southern Alberta (Lethbridge, Taber, Cardston, Pincher Creek, Fort Macleod and Claresholm); Medicine Hat, Brooks and Redcliff; the Foothills and Crowsnest Pass; and Canmore, Banff and the Bow Valley. Edmonton and Northern Alberta are at edmontonmetalroofing.com. Same company, same Calgary office, same crews and warranties.

What warranties come with a metal roof in Calgary?

Two. The manufacturer, Interlock Roofing, gives the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty on the aluminum material and its factory finish: it runs for as long as the original purchaser owns the home, is transferable once, and excludes workmanship. We, Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd., give a 10 Year Limited Labour Warranty on the workmanship of the installation, for the purchaser who lives in the home. They are separate documents with separate terms, and you can read both in full before you buy.

How much does a metal roof cost in Calgary?

It depends on your roof, so we price each house after a free consultation instead of publishing a number. The biggest factors are roof area, pitch and complexity (valleys, dormers, skylights and chimneys), what has to come off, the profile you choose, and options such as snow guards or the Class A Fire Rated Available assembly. The consultation is on Zoom or at your home, you get a fixed price in writing, and any current offer is shown on this page.
