Who is Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd.?
We are the certified Interlock® roofing contractor for Alberta, installing Interlock® roofs since 1999 from our office at 210, 3750 46 Ave SE in Calgary, which serves both Calgary and Edmonton. We install one roofing system, the Interlock® aluminum roof, made in Canada by Interlock Roofing Ltd. at its plant in Delta, BC, and installed in Alberta by our own Alberta company. We are BBB Accredited with an A+ rating, Baeumler Approved, a Metal Roofing Alliance member and a GuildQuality GuildMaster Award winner in 2026.
What roof profiles can I choose from?
Six: Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Mediterranean Tile, Standing Seam and Solid Copper. Slate is by far the profile Albertans choose most, and Shake and Cedar Shingle are the usual choice when an owner wants to keep the look of a wood roof. Every profile needs a minimum 3/12 roof slope. We bring samples to the consultation, at your home or on Zoom, so you can see each one against your house.
Will an Interlock roof stand up to Alberta hail?
It is built for hail country, though no roof is immune to every storm. Interlock's aluminum panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, the highest class in that standard, tested and listed by Intertek under Delta Building Products, the manufacturing operation in Delta, BC. The City of Calgary describes Calgary as sitting in hail alley, the area of Canada that sees the most hail. The manufacturer's material warranty excludes hail larger than 38 mm (1.5 in), and hail damage is a matter for your home insurance.
What warranties come with an Interlock roof in Alberta?
Two. The manufacturer, Interlock Roofing Ltd., gives the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty on the aluminum material and its factory finish. We, Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd., give a 10 Year Limited Labour Warranty on the workmanship of the installation. They are separate documents with separate terms, and you can read both in full before you buy.
How much does a metal roof cost in Alberta?
It depends on your roof, so we price each house after a free consultation instead of publishing a number. The biggest factors are roof area, pitch and complexity (valleys, dormers, skylights and chimneys), what is under the old roof, the profile you choose, and options such as the Class A Fire Rated Available assembly, snow guards or hidden gutters. Acreages, mountain homes and long drives from Calgary or Edmonton change the logistics too. You get a fixed price in writing, and anything the deck needs goes into that quote, not into a change order later.
Which parts of Alberta do you install in?
All of Alberta, run as two markets from one company. Our Calgary market covers Metro Calgary, Central Alberta (Red Deer, Lacombe, Olds, Sylvan Lake, Rocky Mountain House), Southern Alberta (Lethbridge, Taber, Cardston, Pincher Creek, Fort Macleod, Claresholm), Medicine Hat, Brooks and Redcliff, the Foothills and Crowsnest Pass, and Banff, Canmore and the Bow Valley; its town pages are on calgarymetalroofing.com. Our Edmonton market covers Metro Edmonton, the Peace Country (Grande Prairie, Peace River, Slave Lake), Edson, Hinton and Whitecourt, and Vegreville, Vermilion, Wainwright and Lloydminster; its town pages are on edmontonmetalroofing.com. Same company and the same warranties everywhere; if your town isn't listed, ask.
Do you have an office in Edmonton?
No. Our one Alberta office is in Calgary, at 210, 3750 46 Ave SE, and it serves Edmonton and Northern Alberta as well as Calgary and the south. You don't need to come to the office: consultations happen at your home or on Zoom. Edmonton-area homeowners get the same company, the same warranties and a fixed price in writing, and Edmonton, Sherwood Park, Spruce Grove and St. Albert are among the places we have roofed most.
Are you the same company as the manufacturer?
No. Interlock Roofing Ltd. manufactures the panels at its plant in Delta, BC, and issues the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty on the material. Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd. is the Alberta company, based in Calgary, that sells and installs them and gives you the 10 Year Limited Labour Warranty on the installation. The two work closely, but they are separate companies with separate warranties.
Is an Interlock roof really made in Canada?
Yes. Interlock® panels are manufactured by Interlock Roofing Ltd. in Delta, BC, and installed in Alberta by our own Alberta company, Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd. Made in Canada, installed in Alberta: the roof never crosses a border on its way to your home, and the company that installs it is the one that stands behind the workmanship. We are Canadian owned and operated.
How many roofs have you installed in Alberta?
Our job book records 3,542 completed Interlock® roofs in Alberta since 1999. Calgary and Edmonton have the most, followed by Sherwood Park, Lethbridge, Red Deer, Spruce Grove, St. Albert, Grande Prairie, Medicine Hat and Fort McMurray. Every completed roof is listed by town, so the town pages on calgarymetalroofing.com and edmontonmetalroofing.com show the install record for your part of the province, including the profiles and colours chosen there.
Are you licensed and insured?
Alberta does not require roofers to hold a trade certificate: Alberta's apprenticeship system lists Roofer as an optional certification trade. So the checks that matter are WCB coverage, liability insurance, a municipal business licence where your city requires one, a written contract and a warranty you can read in full. Ask us, and any other roofer, for a WCB clearance letter and an insurance certificate. WCB-Alberta lets you check any registered company's clearance status online yourself.
Where can I read reviews of your work?
On our reviews page, which shows reviews from Alberta homeowners only, with nothing borrowed from another province or state. Edmonton and Calgary homeowners have written the most. Our Baeumler Approved and BBB profiles are public too, and the BBB profile shows complaints and our responses. GuildQuality named Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd. a GuildMaster Award winner in 2026, and we are a HomeStars member.
How do I contact you?
Call our Calgary office on the number shown on this page, or email scott@calgarymetalroofing.com. The office is at 210, 3750 46 Ave SE, Calgary, AB T2B 0L1, and our hours are on the contact page. Consultations are by appointment, at your home or on Zoom. Existing customers with a service or labour warranty question can reach abservice@interlockroofing.com or 1-866-588-7663, and Guardian material warranty claims go to guardian@interlockroofing.com.
How long does a metal roof last?
Aluminum has been known to last over 100 years, because it does not rust or rot and absorbs no water to freeze and thaw inside it. That is a property of the metal, not a promise about any one roof. The written terms are the warranties: the manufacturer's Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty covers the material and finish while the original purchaser owns the home, and a transferred warranty runs to 50 years from installation. Our metal roof lifespan page goes into more detail.
Is an Interlock roof aluminum or steel?
Aluminum. The roofs we install are heavy-gauge aluminum, and Solid Copper is the other option. The difference matters because aluminum contains no iron, so it does not rust, and it absorbs no water and cannot rot; steel depends on its coating to keep rust away. The manufacturer's ICC-ES evaluation report lists 3105-H24 and 3003-H24 aluminum alloys for the shingle, shake and tile panels, and the aluminum has up to 95% recycled content.
Which profile is most popular in Alberta?
Slate, by a wide margin: our job book shows it on more Alberta roofs than every other profile combined. Shake and Cedar Shingle are the usual choice when a cedar roof is being replaced and the owner wants to keep the look, Mediterranean Tile suits houses designed around a tile roof, and Standing Seam gives a clean, modern line. We bring samples of every profile to the consultation so you can compare them on your own house.
What colours are available?
Nine: Solid Copper, Copper Penny, Hunter Green, Black, Deep Charcoal, Musket Grey, Tile Red, Colonial Brown and Tudor Brown. The finish is the Alunar® coating system, a 70% PVDF coating certified to AAMA 2605, backed by a 30 Year Alunar® Coating Warranty, and the colours are rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC). We bring samples to your consultation, because colour on a roof reads differently under Alberta sun than on a screen.
Will it look like real slate or cedar?
From the street it reads as a slate, shake or shingle roof. The Shake profile has deep, hand-split shadow lines, and the Cedar Shingle profile has the flatter look of a sawn cedar roof. The best way to judge is on your own house: we bring samples and colours to the consultation so you can hold them up against your siding and trim.
Do you install aluminum shingles?
Yes. Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake and Mediterranean Tile are all interlocking aluminum profiles. Each piece locks to its neighbours on all four sides with the fasteners concealed, so from the street the roof reads as slate, cedar or tile rather than sheet metal. They are made in Canada by Interlock Roofing Ltd. and installed in Alberta by our own company, with a fixed price in writing after a free consultation.
Do you install copper roofs?
Yes. Solid Copper is one of our six profiles, and it is usually used on a bay window, porch or entry rather than a whole house. It is priced differently from the aluminum profiles, so ask for it as a separate line in your quote. The manufacturer's Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty covers every Interlock profile, Solid Copper included.
Do you install standing seam metal roofs?
Yes. Standing Seam is one of our six profiles, alongside Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Mediterranean Tile and Solid Copper, and it needs a minimum 3/12 roof slope like every other profile. Bring photos of the look you want to the consultation, and we will go through the details with you and price it in writing.
How heavy is an Interlock roof?
Roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre depending on profile, a fraction of the weight of concrete tile. That leaves the structure's capacity for snow load through a long Alberta winter, and replacing concrete tile usually takes weight off the house. We still check the deck and framing at the consultation and put anything that needs attention in the written quote.
What is the minimum roof slope for an Interlock roof?
3/12. Every Interlock profile needs a minimum 3/12 slope, and the manufacturer's ICC-ES evaluation report lists 3:12 with code-compliant self-adhered underlayment. If part of your roof is flatter than that, such as a porch, a low addition or a low-slope section on a modern infill home, that section needs a different roofing system, and we will point it out at the consultation so it is dealt with in the written quote.
Is an aluminum roof environmentally friendly?
It has a strong case. The aluminum in Interlock panels has up to 95% recycled content, the panels are made in Canada rather than shipped in from overseas, and a roof that does not need replacing avoids the repeated tear-off waste of shorter-lived roofs. The colours are CRRC-rated, so their solar reflectance and thermal emittance are published.
How bad is hail in Alberta?
Bad enough to set national records. The Insurance Bureau of Canada reported almost $1.2 billion in insured damage from the June 13, 2020 Calgary hailstorm, then the costliest hailstorm in Canadian history. It reported nearly $2.8 billion from the August 5, 2024 Calgary hailstorm, the second-costliest insured event in Canadian history after the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfire. The City of Calgary places the city in hail alley, the area of Canada that sees the most hail. Roof choice matters here more than in most of the country.
What does a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating mean?
It is the top class in UL 2218, the impact test for roof coverings, and Interlock's aluminum panels are listed at Class 4 by Intertek (SPEC ID 33876) under Delta Building Products, covering the Diamond, Shingle and Slate, Shake and Tile panel families. For Class 4, a 51 mm (2-inch) steel ball is dropped from 6.1 m (20 feet) onto the roofing, and to pass it must show no tearing, fracturing, cracking, splitting or rupture. The test is about the covering staying intact, not about appearance.
Can hail dent an aluminum roof?
Yes, large hail can dent any metal roof. The Class 4 rating is about the panel not cracking or rupturing on impact, not about it staying free of marks. The manufacturer's material warranty excludes hail larger than 38 mm (1.5 in) and normal wear, including minor scratches and dents. Hail damage is a home insurance matter, so read how your policy treats cosmetic damage to a roof before you buy, and ask your insurer if anything is unclear.
What should I do after a hailstorm?
Stay off the roof. Photograph any damage you can see from the ground, including gutters, siding and vents, before anything is moved or cleaned up, and contact your insurer to start a claim if you think there is damage. Then call our service line at 1-866-588-7663 or email abservice@interlockroofing.com, and we will look at what needs repair and price it in writing. Hail is excluded from both roof warranties, so the repair is usually an insurance matter.
Does home insurance or the warranty cover hail and storm damage?
Generally that is your home insurance, not the roof warranties. The labour warranty excludes hail, wind storms, hurricane-force winds and impact of foreign objects, and the manufacturer's material warranty excludes severe weather, Acts of God and hail larger than 38 mm (1.5 in). Check your policy, photograph damage before anything is moved, and call us at 1-866-588-7663 to assess the repair.
Can I use a hail insurance settlement toward an Interlock roof?
Ask your insurer, because the insurer decides what a claim pays for. If you would rather put the settlement toward an aluminum roof and pay the difference yourself, ask your insurer whether that is allowed under your policy before you sign anything. We give you a fixed price in writing that you can share with them. The decision on the claim is theirs and yours; we price and install the roof.
What is a Class A fire-rated roof assembly?
Class A is the highest fire classification for roof coverings under ASTM E108, and it rates a complete roof assembly rather than a covering alone; in Canada the matching standard is CAN/ULC-S107. The roof covering, underlayment and deck are tested together, which is why the same panel can carry different classifications on different assemblies. On our roofs, Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly: two layers of GAF VersaShield® over 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood, per ASTM E108. When a roofer says their roof is Class A, ask which assembly the rating applies to.
Is an Interlock roof fire rated?
Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly. Under ASTM E108 a fire classification belongs to the assembly, not the panel; on our roofs Class A is achieved with two layers of GAF VersaShield® over 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood. Aluminum itself does not ignite. If you want the Class A assembly, ask for it in your quote, where it is priced as a line item.
What roofing does FireSmart Alberta recommend?
Class A. FireSmart Alberta's roof fact sheet says Class A fire-rated roofing materials provide a high level of protection, and it lists asphalt-composition shingles, metal, and slate, clay or concrete tile as examples. No material earns that rating on its own; the rating belongs to the assembly. On our roofs, Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly: two layers of GAF VersaShield® over 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood, and the aluminum does not ignite.
Will a metal roof stop my house burning in a wildfire?
No roof can promise that, and no roof is fireproof. The 2016 Fort McMurray wildfire remains the costliest insured event in Canadian history, according to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, and in a wildfire embers get into gutters, vents and gaps at the roof edge. A Class A assembly and aluminum that does not ignite help, which is why FireSmart guidance looks at the whole home ignition zone, not just the roof covering. If your home is near forest, we walk the whole roof edge with you at the consultation.
What else should I fix at the roof edge near forest?
Gutters, vents and gaps. FireSmart Canada recommends gutters and downspouts made of non-combustible materials such as aluminum, copper or galvanized steel, and non-combustible vents with 3 mm screening or ASTM fire-rated vents. Keep gutters clear of needles and leaves through fire season. We go through the gutters, vents and roof edges with you at the consultation, and we install hidden gutters where the design needs them.
Can I replace a cedar shake roof on a mountain home and keep the look?
Yes. Interlock's Shake and Cedar Shingle profiles keep the cedar look in aluminum, which does not ignite, and Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly: two layers of GAF VersaShield® over 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood, per ASTM E108. That suits homes in Canmore, the Bow Valley and the foothills. Cedar shingles and shakes always come off before the new roof goes on, so the old roof's condition and the deck underneath are checked and priced in your written quote.
What does "lifetime" mean in the Guardian warranty?
For as long as the original purchaser owns the home on which the roof was installed and remains the registered owner under the warranty. Coverage runs from the date of original installation. It is a limited warranty on the material and its factory finish; it does not cover installation workmanship, which is covered separately by our labour warranty.
How long is the labour warranty?
Ten years from the Substantial Completion Date on your certificate. It is issued by Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd., covers the workmanship of the installation, and stays in effect while a purchaser named on the certificate is the registered owner of, and lives at, the property. It takes effect once the contract is paid in full, and it is not transferable.
Can I transfer the warranty if I sell my home?
The Guardian material warranty transfers once, to the first subsequent registered owner, who receives coverage to 50 years from the original installation date. The transfer needs notice to the manufacturer with proof of purchase within 60 days of the change of ownership and a $300 transfer fee. Our 10 Year Limited Labour Warranty is not transferable.
Which warranty covers a leak?
It depends on where the water gets in. If the problem is in how the roof was installed, such as flashings, trim or a detail, it is a labour warranty matter for us. If it is a defect in the panels or their finish, it is a Guardian matter for the manufacturer. If you are not sure, call us first at 1-866-588-7663 and we will tell you which applies.
How do I make a warranty claim?
For workmanship, contact us at abservice@interlockroofing.com or 1-866-588-7663 no later than 10 days after you find the issue, with your name, address, phone number, certificate number and a description. For the material, write to guardian@interlockroofing.com within 30 days of the issue becoming known, with your registration number, installation date, photos and contact details. If an inspection finds a home-maintenance issue rather than workmanship, a minimum $250 inspection fee may apply.
Do I need to register the Guardian warranty?
Yes, within 60 days of installation, using the registration form we supply. If you need another copy of the form, request one from policies@interlockgroup.com. Registration matters because a claim asks for your registration number, and a transfer to a new owner later works from the registered record.
What do the warranties not cover?
Read the exclusions before you sign. The material warranty excludes installation workmanship, severe weather and Acts of God, hail larger than 38 mm (1.5 in), condensation, ice damming, normal wear including minor scratches and dents, and alterations, foot traffic or equipment added after installation. The labour warranty excludes, among others, fire, lightning, wind storms, hail, impact of foreign objects, ice damming, snow and ice shedding, inadequate venting or insulation, pressure washing, and items such as solar added to the roof.
Can I read the warranties before I buy?
Yes, and we would rather you did. The Guardian warranty summary and the full 10 Year Limited Labour Warranty text are on our warranty pages, the Alberta labour certificate (Form 5290 AB) is available as a PDF, and a free copy of the complete Guardian warranty is available from policies@interlockgroup.com. We also hand you the warranty documents with your quote.
Why don't you publish a price per square foot?
Because a per-square-foot number would be wrong for most houses. Two homes on the same street can differ a lot in roof area, pitch and what is underneath the old roof, and those differences move the price more than the panels do. One consultation gets you a fixed price in writing for your house, and that is the number we stand behind. If you are comparing quotes, compare the system, the fasteners, the warranty terms and the contractor's coverage first, then the price.
How much does an Interlock roof cost?
An Interlock® roof is priced for your house, not from a price list: roof area, pitch, complexity, what has to come off, the profile and any options set the number. We measure the roof, look at the deck and framing where we can, go through profiles and colours with you, and give you a fixed price in writing. The consultation and the written price are free, with no obligation. Book one through the quote form or call our Calgary office.
Is the estimate free, and am I obligated to anything?
Yes, the estimate is free, and there is no obligation. Consultations are by appointment, at your home or on Zoom, with a visit to measure the roof and look at the deck. We go through profiles and colours with you using real samples and leave you with a fixed price in writing; our scheduling team confirms the install timing. What you do with it after that is up to you.
Can the consultation be on Zoom?
Yes. You can choose a consultation on Zoom or one at your home, wherever you are in Alberta. On Zoom we go through the profiles, colours, warranties and your questions, which suits busy households and families helping a parent from out of town. Either way, the roof is measured and the deck looked at before you get a fixed price in writing, so the number reflects your actual roof.
Will the price change after I sign?
No. The price in writing is the price. If we find something that needs attention, such as soft decking or framing that needs work, it goes into that written quote before you sign, not into a change order afterwards. That is why we look at the deck and framing where we can before we price the roof.
Is a metal roof worth it compared with asphalt shingles?
For an owner who wants to stop re-roofing, usually yes, though it costs more up front than an asphalt re-roof. We install one roofing system and don't install asphalt, so if you're comparing us with asphalt you're comparing a roof you'll replace again with one that shouldn't need it. Interlock panels lock on all four sides with concealed fasteners, aluminum absorbs no water and cannot rot, and the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty covers the material and finish while the original purchaser owns the home. The trade-offs are the higher upfront price and the need for a trained installer.
Do you offer financing?
Only through promotions, and offers change. When a promotion includes payment terms, it is shown on our home page with its full conditions and expiry date, and the terms you qualify for are written into your quote. We don't offer standing financing, so check the current offer on the home page or ask at your free consultation.
Where can I buy Interlock metal roofing in Alberta?
From us. Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd. is the certified Interlock® roofing contractor for Alberta, and we sell and install the system as a complete roof, so the manufacturer's material warranty and our labour warranty come with it. Book a free consultation through the quote form or call our Calgary office, which serves Edmonton and the rest of the province too, for a fixed price in writing.
How does an aluminum roof handle chinooks and freeze-thaw?
Well, because aluminum absorbs no water, so there is nothing in the panel for meltwater to soak into, freeze and expand. Chinooks can swing southern Alberta temperatures by up to 20 °C, according to the Canada West Foundation, so roofs go through melt and refreeze again and again through the winter. Interlock panels lock to each other on all four sides with the fasteners concealed, so there are no exposed screw heads for water and ice to work at. Flashings, valleys and gutters still have to drain, and we check those details at the consultation.
What wind speed is an Interlock roof rated for?
Wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) when installed to manufacturer specification, under the manufacturer's Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty. The City of Calgary lists severe thunderstorms, intense low-pressure systems, cold fronts and chinooks as the causes of its strongest winds. The panels lock to each other on all four sides with the fasteners concealed, which leaves no loose tab or edge for a gust to lift. Damage from severe weather and Acts of God is excluded, so read the exclusions before you buy.
How does a metal roof handle heavy snow?
It sheds it. Snow and ice can build up and release unexpectedly, so keep the release area under the eaves clear of people, cars and property through the winter. Snow guards over entries, decks, driveways and walkways restrict how much releases at once, and we price them as a line item. Ask where the snow will slide and where the guards go before the roof is ordered, not after the first slide. The panels weigh roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre, which leaves the structure's capacity for snow load.
Do you install snow guards?
Yes. Snow guards over entries, decks and walkways are priced as a line item in your written quote, and we plan their placement with you at the consultation. If you want guards added, removed or moved after the roof is finished, call us to arrange it; that is a service call with charges, not a workmanship warranty item. Guards restrict how much snow releases at once, but they can also let snow build up on the roof.
Will a metal roof stop ice dams?
We won't promise that, and neither warranty does: ice damming is excluded from both the manufacturer's material warranty and our labour warranty. Ice dams come from heat loss. Warm air from the house melts snow on the upper roof, and the water refreezes at the colder eaves, which a chinook followed by a cold snap can make worse. The fix lies in attic insulation, air sealing and ventilation. We look at those with you at the consultation; inadequate venting or insulation is also outside the labour warranty.
What is the best roofing material for Alberta winters?
One that sheds snow, absorbs no water and has nothing exposed for wind or ice to work at. That is the case for interlocking aluminum: it has no water to freeze inside it, contains no iron to rust, is light enough to leave capacity for snow load, locks on all four sides with concealed fasteners, and its wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) when installed to manufacturer specification. Pair it with good attic insulation and ventilation, because no roofing material prevents ice dams on its own.
How does the finish hold up to strong prairie and mountain sun?
The finish is the Alunar® coating system, a 70% PVDF coating certified to AAMA 2605, and it carries a 30 Year Alunar® Coating Warranty. Alberta's clear skies and the higher elevation of homes in Calgary, the foothills and the Bow Valley mean a lot of sun on the roof, which is why the coating matters as much as the metal. Keep the finish in good shape by cleaning from the ground, never with a pressure washer, and by keeping foot traffic off the roof.
Is a metal roof energy efficient in summer heat?
The finish helps. Alunar® colours are rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council, so their solar reflectance and thermal emittance are published, and lighter colours reflect more of the sun. How much that changes your cooling through an Alberta summer depends on your insulation, ventilation and the house itself, so we don't put a savings number on it. Ask to compare the CRRC values of the colours you like.
Is a metal roof noisy in the rain?
Not on a house. The manufacturer's guidance is that on a home with solid decking, underlayment, an attic and insulation, rain noise is comparable to asphalt shingles. The noisy-roof reputation comes from open-framed barns and shops, where rain hits a bare sheet with nothing under it. Our installs go over a solid deck.
Will an aluminum roof rust?
No. Rust is corrosion of iron and steel, and aluminum contains no iron, so there is no rust to start at a scratch, a cut edge or a fastener hole. That is one reason Interlock roofs are aluminum rather than steel. The finish is the Alunar® coating system, backed by a 30 Year Alunar® Coating Warranty, and the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty covers the material. Rinse dirt off from the ground now and then, as you would on any roof.
Do metal roofs attract lightning?
No. Lightning follows height, shape and isolation, not roof material, so it strikes the tallest point around: a tree, a pole, a chimney, a hilltop. The manufacturer cites the Metal Construction Association's technical guidance that a one-storey home with a metal roof is no more likely to be struck than the same home with asphalt. Lightning damage itself is excluded from the labour warranty and is a home insurance matter.
Can a metal roof get condensation?
Any roof can, and it is often mistaken for a leak. Condensation is caused by high humidity and a lack of ventilation, and a warm, occupied house under a cold Alberta winter roof tests both. Keep the attic and other roof cavities well ventilated and the eaves free of blockage; if condensation persists, have a builder check ventilation, insulation and the vapour barrier. Condensation is excluded from the manufacturer's material warranty, and inadequate venting or insulation is excluded from the labour warranty.
How long does a metal roof installation take?
There is no fixed figure, because timing depends on the stock of the profile and colour you choose, crew availability, permit approval where one is needed, and the size and complexity of the roof. Our scheduling team confirms the timing for your project. Hips, valleys, dormers, skylights and chimneys each add flashing and time, and acreages, mountain homes and longer drives from Calgary or Edmonton add logistics.
Can a metal roof go over my existing shingles?
Only over a single layer of asphalt shingles, and only after inspection. Cedar shingles and shakes, concrete tile and natural slate always come off. With one layer of asphalt, we inspect first to see whether a roof-over is suitable, because problems such as rot can be hiding underneath, and they have to be dealt with before the new roof goes on. Whatever the inspection finds is written into your quote.
Do I need a permit to replace my roof in Calgary or Edmonton?
Often not, but it depends on the work. Alberta's Permit Regulation does not require a permit to replace roofing with similar materials for maintenance or appearance, as long as health and safety are not at risk and there is no structural change, according to Safety Codes bulletin 19-BCB-007. A change of material, new sheathing or rafters, or other structural work can change that, and the City of Calgary, the City of Edmonton or your local permit issuer has the final word. We confirm what your address needs before you sign.
Which building code applies to roofs in Alberta?
The National Building Code – 2023 Alberta Edition, in force since May 1, 2024, according to the Government of Alberta. Your municipality or accredited agency enforces it, so it is the local permit issuer, not the contractor, that decides how it applies to your project. Where structural work is part of the job, we confirm the requirements for your address before you sign.
Can you install on acreages and mountain homes?
Yes. Acreages around Calgary and Edmonton, homes in Canmore and the Bow Valley, and the Foothills and Crowsnest Pass are all within the areas we serve. Long driveways, steep lots and distance change the logistics, and we plan them at the consultation so they are reflected in your written price and install timing. If the home is near forest, ask about the Class A Fire Rated Available assembly and non-combustible gutters while the roof is planned.
Can I put solar panels on an Interlock roof?
Talk to us before anything is mounted. Damage from equipment added to the roof after installation is excluded from the manufacturer's material warranty, and the installation of solar, antennas or other items on the roof is excluded from our labour warranty. Work on the roof by anyone other than us or our authorized representatives may also void the labour warranty, so bring us into the racking plan first.
Do you handle gutters, skylights and chimneys?
Yes, skylights and chimneys are flashed as part of the roof, and each adds time that is reflected in the price. For gutters, we install hidden gutters where the design needs them; standard aluminum gutters are coordinated with a third-party gutter specialist. If your home is near forest, ask about non-combustible gutters and screened vents while the roof work is planned.
What maintenance does an Interlock roof need?
Very little, but not none. Have the gutters cleaned regularly and have branches and other debris removed from the roof promptly. Rinse dirt or mildew from the ground with a hose and a well-diluted non-abrasive detergent. Keep attic ventilation working and the eaves clear. Unlike cedar, there is no re-treating, and unlike asphalt, there is no granule loss to watch for.
Can I walk on my metal roof?
It is best avoided, for your safety and for the finish. Do what you can from the ground with long-handled tools, and hire a skilled professional for anything that needs roof access. Foot traffic after installation is excluded from the manufacturer's material warranty, and work by anyone other than us or our representatives may void the labour warranty, so call us first.
Can I pressure wash a metal roof?
No. The use of high-pressure washing systems is excluded from our labour warranty. Clean the roof from the ground by lightly hosing it down with a well-diluted non-abrasive liquid detergent and a long-poled soft-bristle brush, and remove debris with a long rope or pole. How fast dirt and mildew build up depends on slope, shade, trees and sun exposure.
Who do I call about storm damage or a fallen tree on my roof?
Call our service line at 1-866-588-7663 or email abservice@interlockroofing.com. We can look at the damage and arrange the repair. Damage from wind storms, falling objects and other Acts of God is excluded from both warranties, so it is usually a home insurance claim; photograph the damage before anything is moved.
Will the colour fade, and will I ever need to repaint?
No repainting is part of normal ownership. The factory finish is the Alunar® coating system, a 70% PVDF coating certified to AAMA 2605, and it carries a 30 Year Alunar® Coating Warranty. Keep the finish in good shape by cleaning from the ground with a hose and a mild detergent, never a pressure washer, and by keeping foot traffic off the roof.
Can our condominium corporation replace its roofs with Interlock?
Yes, and the board usually leads it where the roofs are common property. Under Alberta's Condominium Property Act, the corporation must keep the common property in good repair, and your plan and bylaws set out exactly what is common property and what is part of a unit. We can meet the board or the property manager, walk the roofs, and give a fixed price in writing, along with the product documents, colour samples and warranty terms the board and owners will ask for. One profile and one colour can run across every building in a townhouse complex.
Does a condo board need an owner vote to change the roofing material?
It can. Under section 38 of Alberta's Condominium Property Act, money can be taken from the reserve fund for a capital improvement only if a special resolution authorizes it, and a special resolution needs at least 75% of the owners representing at least 75% of the unit factors. Whether upgrading to a different roofing material counts as a repair or replacement, or as an improvement, is a question for your condominium lawyer, so get legal advice before the board decides how to fund and approve it.
How does a roof replacement fit our reserve fund study?
Roofs are one of the main components a reserve fund study looks at. In Alberta, a condominium corporation must have a reserve fund study and report done at least every five years by a qualified person, and the board then approves a reserve fund plan. A fixed price in writing for the roofs, with the warranty documents, gives the board and the reserve fund study provider real numbers to plan with instead of estimates.
Can one owner in a condominium get an Interlock roof?
Only if the corporation agrees, where the roof is common property. Your plan and bylaws decide whether your roof is common property or part of your unit, and who is responsible for it. If it is common property, get the board's approval in writing before you sign anything, and make sure it covers who pays for future repair, maintenance and insurance. We can supply the specification sheets and warranty terms the board needs to decide.
How do the warranties apply to a condominium?
The manufacturer's Guardian warranty terms are the same for each building, but the board should read the full terms before it decides, because the ownership and transfer rules matter in a condominium. Our labour warranty covers the purchaser named on the certificate while that purchaser is the registered owner of, and lives at, the property. We give the board both documents in full with the quote.
What code evaluation covers the Interlock system?
ICC-ES evaluation report ESR-1790, held by the manufacturer, Interlock Roofing Ltd. It evaluates fire classification, wind-uplift resistance and weather resistance for the Shingle, Diamond, Shake and Hidden Fastener Tile panels under the International Building Code and International Residential Code. In Alberta, acceptance rests with the authority having jurisdiction under the National Building Code – 2023 Alberta Edition, so share the report early, and check the current version on the ICC-ES website.
What are the material specifications?
Per the manufacturer's ICC-ES report, the aluminum shingle and diamond panels are 3105-H24 alloy at 0.48 mm (0.019 in) base metal, and the shake and tile panels are 3003-H24 or 3105-H24 at 0.70 mm (0.0276 in). The finish is the Alunar® coating system, a 70% PVDF coating certified to AAMA 2605, with CRRC-rated colours. Installed weight is roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre depending on profile.
How is the Class A assembly built?
Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly: Interlock aluminum over two layers of GAF VersaShield® fire-resistant underlayment on 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood, classified under ASTM E108 per ICC-ES ESR-2053. In Canada the matching standard is CAN/ULC-S107. Specify the assembly, not the panel, because the classification belongs to the whole build-up, and ask us for it as a priced line in the quote.
What wind-uplift values are published?
The manufacturer's ICC-ES report ESR-1790 lists maximum allowable uplift loads that depend on the fastening system: up to 8.50 kPa (177.5 psf) for the shingle and diamond panels, 6.82 kPa (142.5 psf) for the hidden fastener tile panels and 5.51 kPa (115.0 psf) for the shake panels. Check the current report before you specify. The Guardian warranty warrants wind resistance to 193 km/h (120 mph) when installed to manufacturer specification.
Where can I get spec sheets, test reports and samples?
Email scott@calgarymetalroofing.com or call our Calgary office. The manufacturer publishes its test reports and certifications at interlockroofing.com, including the ICC-ES report and the impact test summary. We can bring samples and colours to a design meeting, in person or on Zoom, and price the roof in writing once the drawings are far enough along.
Do you work with builders and general contractors?
Yes, we take subcontract work from builders and general contractors in Calgary, Edmonton and across Alberta. Talk to us early in the design: slope (minimum 3/12 for every profile), the Class A Fire Rated Available assembly if the site needs it, snow guard locations and the deck are much easier to settle before framing than after. Email scott@calgarymetalroofing.com or call our Calgary office to discuss the project, and our scheduling team will confirm timing.
What deck does an Interlock roof need?
A solid deck. For the Class A Fire Rated Available assembly, the deck is 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood under two layers of GAF VersaShield®. The manufacturer's ICC-ES report sets a minimum 3:12 slope with code-compliant self-adhered underlayment. Confirm the deck and underlayment with us before framing so the roof goes on as specified.
Can you provide WCB and insurance documents for our site?
Yes. Ask us for a WCB clearance letter and our liability insurance certificate. You can also check our clearance status yourself online through WCB-Alberta, which advises getting a clearance before hiring a contractor and before releasing payment, because a principal that hires a contractor without WCB coverage could be responsible for its outstanding premiums. Ask for the insurance certificate to come directly from the broker or insurer with the policy dates on it.
What should a procurement team verify about a roofing contractor in Alberta?
Start with coverage, because Alberta does not require roofers to hold a trade certificate; Roofer is an optional certification trade. Verify WCB coverage with a clearance you check yourself, liability insurance from the insurer, the contractor's legal name and Alberta address, any municipal business licence, and the written warranty terms, including who issues each warranty and what it excludes. Our legal name is Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd., 210, 3750 46 Ave SE, Calgary, AB T2B 0L1.
Do you bid on public-sector and institutional roofing projects?
We review bids when they are submitted to us, but we don't actively pursue public tenders. If you have a public-sector or institutional project, send the scope, location, schedule and submission requirements to scott@calgarymetalroofing.com. For a submission we can provide company documents, the manufacturer's published test and evaluation reports, the warranty documents, and our WCB clearance letter and liability insurance certificate on request.
Is the product Canadian-made, and what is its recycled content?
Yes, it is made in Canada. The panels are manufactured by Interlock Roofing Ltd. in Delta, BC, and installed in Alberta by Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd., a Canadian owned and operated company. The aluminum has up to 95% recycled content, and the Alunar® colours are CRRC-rated, with published solar reflectance and thermal emittance values.
I'm arranging a new roof for my parent. How do we start?
Book the free consultation for a time you can both be there, at the house or on Zoom, which works well when family members live in another city. We measure the roof, bring samples, answer questions and leave a fixed price in writing, with no obligation. Before anyone signs, check the contractor the same way you would for yourself: an Alberta street address, a WCB clearance, liability insurance and a warranty you can read in full.
What happens to the warranties if my parent moves into care or sells the house?
They change. Our labour warranty stays in effect while a purchaser named on the certificate is the registered owner of, and lives at, the property; if more than one purchaser is named, one of them must still own and live there. It is not transferable. The Guardian material warranty runs while the original purchaser owns the home and transfers once to the next registered owner, to 50 years from installation, with notice and proof of purchase within 60 days and a $300 fee.
What protections apply if my parent signs a roofing contract at home?
A 10-day cancellation right, among others. Service Alberta's guidance says that when a written contract is solicited, agreed or signed at your home, or anywhere away from the contractor's normal place of business, the Consumer Protection Act lets you cancel it up to 10 days after you receive your copy. A business that takes money before the work is finished and sells away from its place of business must be licensed as a prepaid contracting business, and you can check a contractor's licence with Service Alberta.
How much upkeep will the roof need as my parent gets older?
Not much, and none of it needs a ladder if you plan for it. There is no re-treating as with cedar. Gutters need regular cleaning and debris should be removed promptly, ideally by a professional rather than a family member on a ladder. Dirt can be rinsed from the ground with a hose and a long-poled soft brush. Put snow guards over the entry and walkways, because snow slides off a metal roof.
How can we avoid roofing scams aimed at older homeowners?
Check who you are dealing with before anyone books work, especially after a hailstorm. Look for an Alberta street address you can find on a map, a WCB clearance you check yourself, liability insurance, a prepaid contracting licence with Service Alberta where the seller asks for a deposit at the door, and finished jobs in nearby towns. Make sure the quote, contract and warranty all name the same company, the one that installs the roof, and read the exclusions before signing.
Will a metal roof lower my home insurance?
That is up to your insurer, so ask them before you assume a discount. Some Alberta insurers recognize impact-resistant roofing and some don't, and terms change. What we can give you is the documentation they may ask for: the UL 2218 Class 4 impact listing by Intertek for the aluminum panels, the Class A Fire Rated Available assembly details if you choose it, and the manufacturer's warranty documents.
Does a metal roof increase my home's resale value?
We can't promise a number, and nobody honestly can. What a buyer gets is concrete: the manufacturer's Guardian material warranty transfers once, giving the next registered owner coverage to 50 years from installation, if notice and proof of purchase reach the manufacturer within 60 days of the sale with the $300 transfer fee. Keep your registration and contract with the house papers.
Are there rebates for a hail-resistant roof in Alberta?
Not at the moment, as far as current programs show. The City of Calgary's Resilient Roofing Rebate Program offered up to $3,000 toward impact-resistant roofing after the 2020 hailstorm, but council ended it in May 2022 once its funding was allocated, and in 2025 city administration did not recommend bringing it back. Program rules change, so check with your municipality and your insurer before you rely on any rebate.
