Roofing in High River: what to plan for

Hail: what the rating covers, and what it doesn't

The Calgary to Red Deer corridor is one of the most hail-prone parts of Canada, so hail is usually the first question we are asked. Interlock's Slate, Shake, Cedar Shingle and Mediterranean Tile aluminum panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, listed by Intertek under Delta Building Products. No roof is hail-proof: very large hail can dent metal, the material warranty excludes hail larger than 38 mm (1.5 in), and hail damage is a matter for your home insurance. Ask your insurer how they treat an impact-rated roof; we can give you the documents.

Chinooks, freeze-thaw and wind

In southern Alberta a chinook can lift a winter day from well below freezing to above it within hours, then the cold returns and the meltwater freezes again. That cycle loosens asphalt granules, and chinook gusts work at shingle tabs. An Interlock roof has no granules to lose and no tabs to lift: the panels lock to each other on all four sides with the fasteners concealed, and wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) installed to manufacturer specification.

Bungalows, infills and older homes

Inner-city bungalows, 1970s split-levels and new infills all take the same system. Interlock's Slate, Cedar Shingle and Shake profiles give the look of stone or wood at roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre, a fraction of concrete tile or natural slate. Every profile needs a minimum 3/12 roof slope, and we confirm yours at the consultation.

Acreages, farms and foothills properties

On an acreage or farm the house, garage, shop and barn can share one profile and colour. In the foothills and the Bow Valley, where forest comes close to the house, we can quote the Class A Fire Rated Available assembly, which uses two layers of GAF VersaShield® over 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood under the panels. Snow guards over entries, decks and the driveway are planned at the quote.

Condo and townhouse complexes

Under Alberta's Condominium Property Act the board of the condominium corporation usually decides on the roof, often with a reserve fund study in hand. We give boards one profile and colour across every building, the product documents they ask for, and both warranties in writing.

A Calgary company, with its own crews

We install every roof ourselves, from our office on 46 Ave SE in Calgary. The manufacturer's Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty and our 10 Year Limited Labour Warranty come with the roof, and the service team that answers for it after the install is here in Alberta.
